- KEN HUGHEY
- Baritone / Lead
- Ken is one of the most recognizable personalities In Gospel music. He is the nephew of the late James "Big Chief" Wetherington, who Ken credits with being his inspiration to have traveled and performed in Gospel music for over 25 years, singing the low down bass. Ken spent seven years with the Pathfinders Quartet before helping to organize The Tribunes, who pioneered "full orchestration" with their first release for Tempo Records. He later sang with the famous Rebels Quartet of Tampa, Florida. Ken's knowledge and experience is a valuable asset to CHAPTER III. He and his wife, Sonja, are active in the church they helped to organize, and he served there seven years as minister of music. He is also an ordained deacon of fifteen years. You're in for a pleasant surprise to hear Ken's contribution to the rich, resonant harmony of CHAPTER III.
- Ken Hughey is one of the most recognizable personalities in all of Southern Gospel Music. Ken's Gospel Music roots go back to when he followed his uncle, James "Big Chief" Wetherington, around and was befriended by Jake Hess, J. D. Sumner, Mosie Lister, and Wally Varner in the late 1940's and 1950's. Ken says he caught the "Bug" then and knew that his life's calling would be as a singer in SGM.
- In 1960, Ken married his high school sweetheart, Sonja (Thomas) Hughey. Ken is an ordained Deacon of over 16 years. He and Sonja have three children and are Charter Members of their church in Lakeland, Florida.
- Ken's first venture into singing was with the "Hess Brothers Quartet" (Jake Hess' brothers, Varnell, Ollie and Chris). He then joined James Taylor and the Pathfinder Quartet. Remnants of the Pathfinders left to organize THE TRIBUNES QUARTET and reached national prominence as one of America's first "super" groups. Next, Ken joined Ronnie Booth, Lee Kitchen, and "Little" Jimmy Taylor in the nationally known Rebels Quartet. In1980, Ken joined the very famous Billy "CRASH" Craddock Show where he spent nine years as the bass vocalist for the Nashville Super Star's group, THE SOUTHERN KNIGHTS.
- Ken has enjoyed tremendous success in Gospel Music. His peers recognize Ken to possess one of the most credible "ears" for music in the business. Ken was offered the bass singing job by Hovie Lister " the STATESMEN QUARTET, J. D. SUMNER & the STAMPS QUARTET, James Blackwood and the BLACKWOOD BROS. QUARTET, but has always chosen to stay loyal to the groups to whom he had given his word and to the leading of the Holy Spirit. The above were all very, very good friends and are special to Ken's memory.
